This narrow long garden consisted of a scruffy worn lawn and a small gravel area, largely unused by the family who lived there. The owners of this townhouse garden in Edinburgh were looking for a space that could be used for entertaining and relaxing, as well as providing a safe place for their children to play. As well as a good area of lawn they needed somewhere for the childrens play equipment. A child friendly contemporary pond was also on their wish list.

To give the illusion of a wider space the design comprised of 5 overlapping/inter-linked circles. The first is a large deck leading out from the house, an adult space for entertaining with plenty space for table & chairs as well as an in-built curved wooden bench. From there the journey carries on over a sunken pond, a small fountain is contained within providing the relaxing sound of water. Its surrounded in silver sandstone paving and a strong steel grill covers the body of water making it safe to walk over. |

Linked to the pond are 2 areas of lawn. These are brick edged to make for easy mowing. There is a variety of planting between here and the deck, low enough that the children can still be seen playing there. The planting starts to get higher/denser further down the garden - so much so that the garden appears to end at the back of the 2nd lawn area. But a small 'secret' path is nestled amongst them, and on the other side is the last circle, a large barked area where play equipment can easily be sited. A large tree provides shade, and there is space for a wooden bench and a summer house/storage area. |
